Information Security Protects, as rightly guessed, Information. In today's world Information is not centralized but is distributed in multiple locations. Some of these process and store the data, while others are responsible for transmitting it.
It is important to protect information at rest (in storage and processing units) as well as during transit (e.g. over network).

Information Security uses C (confidentiality) I (integrity) and A (Availability) triad to secure the information.
It is not always equal mix of CIA that is used in Information Security. Actual combination is decided by the organization based on their nature of business, information classification, customer expectation and regulatory implications.
